Football World Cup Trivia quiz Answers


The following are the correct answers to the football world cup trivia quiz questions asked in the previous post of this blog. A brief factoid is also provided to each question for football world cup trivia enthusiasts.

Answers and Factoids:

Ronaldo represented Brazil in 1998, 2002 and 2006 FIFA world cups and scored a total of 15 goals. He scored 4 goals in 1998, 8 goals in 2002 and 3 goals in 2006.

2.Gabriel Batistuta
Gabriel Batistuta represented Argentina in 3 world cups and scored 10 goals. He scored 4 goals in 1994 world cup, 5 goals in 1998 world cup and 1 goal in 2002 world cup.

3. Ronaldo
Ronaldo represented Brazil in 1998, 2002 and 2006 FIFA world cups and scored a total of 15 goals. He scored 4 goals in 1998, 8 goals in 2002 and 3 goals in 2006.

4.Just Fontaine
Just Fontaine scored 13 goals in FIFA World Cup finals tournament in 1958. It is a record for most number of goals scored in a single world cup tournament & it still stands a record today.

Diego Maradona scored 8 goals for Argentina in the 4 world cups he played. He captained Argentina and led them to victory in 1986 tournament. Also won the Golden Ball award in the same tournament.

9.Lothar Matthaus
Lothar Matthaus played  for Germany in five world cups. In those five world cups, he played 25 games which remains a record till today.

Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland was just 17Y-01M-10D old when he played his first world cup match. He played in 1982 and 1986 editions of world cup.

11.Roger Milla
Roger Milla of Cameroon was 42Y-01M-08Days old when he played his last world cup match. He played in 3 world cups, I.e. 1982, 1990 and 1994 editions. 

12.Hakan sukur
Hakan sukur of Turkey scored fastest goal in the history of world cup. In 2002 edition of world cup, he scored a goal against Korea Republic in 11 seconds from the kickoff time.

13. Cafu
Cafu (Marcos Evangelista de Moraes) of Brazil has been given 6 yellow cards in the 20 matches he played in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006 world cups.

15.Geoff Hurst
Geoff Hurst of England  is the only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final as England recorded a 4-2 victory over West Germany in 1966. He also holds the record for Most goals scored in all final matches along with Pele, Vava and Zinedine Zidane.

16.Pele
Pele is the only player who had been part of a world cup winning side 3 times. He was a member of Brazil football team which won world cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Pele was 17 years and 239 days old when he scored a goal for Brazil against wales in 1958 world cup.

Pele was 17 years and 244 days old when he scored a hat-trick for Brazil against France in 1958 world cup semi final match. Brazil won that match 5-2.

Ernest Wilimowski of Poland scored 4 goals in a match against Brazil in 1938 world cup. Brazil won this match 6-5.

20.Pele
Pele was 17 years and 249 days when he scored a goal for Brazil in 1958 world cup final against Sweden.

21.Roger Milla
Roger Milla was 42 years and 39 days old when he scored a goal in a world cup match against Russia in 1994 world cup.

22.Johan Neeskens
Johan Neeskens of Netherlands scored a goal in 90 seconds against West Germany on 7 July 1974.

23. Ernie Brandts
Ernie Brandts of Netherlands scored a own goal in the 18th minute and a goal in the 50th minute in the match against Italy in 1978 world cup. Netherlands finally won the match 2-1.

24. 4
4 is the maximum number of own goals scored in a single world cup. But the interesting fact is that it happened 3times overall. I.e. in 1954, 1998 and 2006 world cups respectively.

25. 2
2 is the maximum of own goals scored in a world cup match. It occurred in a match played between United States and Portugal in 2002 world cup. Jorge Costa of Portugal and Jeff Agoos of USA scored the self goals.

26.70
70 is the fewest number of goals scored in a single edition of world cup. It happened twice. In 1930 and 1934 editions of world cup, only 70 goals were scored in total.

27. Luis Guevara Mora
Luis Guevara Mora of El Salvador conceded 10 goals in a match against Hungary in 1982 world cup.

28. Hong Deok-young
Hong Deok-young of South Korea conceded 16 goals in 1954 world cup edition. After retiring, he was an international football referee from 1957 to 1967.

29.Helmut Schon 
Helmut Schon of West Germany acted as a coach for 25 matches in world cups between 1966 and 1978.

31.Carlos Alberto Parreira
Carlos Alberto Parreira has led national teams to world cup 6 times. He coached 5 different national teams to world cup so far. Kuwait in 1982, United Arab Emirates in 1990, Brazil in 1994 and 2006, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa in 2010. 

32. Luiz Felipe Scolari
Luiz Felipe Scolari  had won 11 consecutive games of which 7 games were won by Brazil in 2002 and the next 4 were won by Portugal in 2006. After  this 11, Portugal won its next match, the quarterfinal against England, by penalty kicks, which technically counts as a draw.

33.Luiz Felipe Scolari
Luiz Felipe Scolari had a period with 12 consecutive matches without a loss between 2002 and 2006. This record holds good still today.

34.Juan Jose Tramutola
Juan Jose Tramutola of Argentina was 27 years and 267 days  old in 1930 when he was assigned this job.

Otto Rehhagel was 71 years and 317 days old when was the coach of Greece in 2010.

This particular Uruguay vs Brazil match played on 16 July 1950 at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in1950 edition of world cup witnessed a whopping 199,854 attendance. Till today no other world cup match had witnessed better turnout.

37. 1994
1994 edition of world cup had highest attendance in a tournament, ie  3,570,000 whereas 1934 edition of world cup had lowest attendance in a tournament, I.e. 390,000.

38. 1930
This Romania vs Peru match played on 14 July 1930 at Estadio Pocitos, Montevideo, Uruguay in World Cup 1930 had the lowest attendance of just 300.

39. Jose Nasazzi
Jose Nasazzi of Uruguay won the golden ball award in 1930 while Guillermo Stabile of Argentina won the silver ball and Jose Leandro Andrade of Uruguay won the bronze ball.

40. Giuseppe Meazza
Giuseppe Meazza of Italy won the golden ball award in 1934 while Matthias Sindelar of Austria won the silver ball and Oldrich Nejedly of Czechoslovakia won bronze medal.

Vittorio Pozzo is the only manager whose team has won world cup twice. He was the manager of Italy when it won the world cups in 1934 and 1938.

Marcello Lippi was the manager of Italy when it won it's 4th world cup title. He was named the world's best football manager by the IFFHS both in 1996 and 1998, and world's best National coach in 2006. In 2007, The Times included him in its list of the top 50 managers of all time.

Luiz Felipe Scolari was the manager of Brazil team when it won world cup title in 2002. He is a former defender. He is the current manager of brazil national team and in the past he managed many teams, chelsea and portugal being noted ones among them.

Gonzalo Higuain of Argentina was the only player to score a hat-trick in 2010 edition of FIFA world cup. He scored this against South Korea in the first round match which Argentina won 4-1.

No player was able to score to a hat-trick in 2006 FIFA world cup. This 2006 edition of world cup remains the only edition so far in which a hat-trick hasn't been scored.

89. Gabriel Batistuta 
Gabriel Batistuta OF Argentina was the only player to a score a hat-trick in 1998 FIFA world cup. He scored this against Jamaica, a game which Argentina won by 5-0.

In 1954 FIFA world cup, a total of 8 hat-tricks were scored, which is double the next highest, ie of 4 hat-tricks which occurred thrice, each in 1938, 1982 and 1986.

12 goals were scored in a match between Austria and Switzerland in 1954 world cup. Austria won that match with score reading 7-5.

Brazil scored 5 goals in the world final match against Sweden in 1958 which it won comprehensively in the end. Sweden managed to score only 2 goals.

7 goals were scored in the 1958 world cup final match between Brazil and sweden. Brazil won this match with scoreboard reading 5-2.

98. Hungary
Hungary scored a total of 27 goals in 1958 edition of FIFA world cup. It remains a record till today as no other team was able to score more goals than this in any world cup tournament. France comes second in the list with 23 goals.

99. 1998
In 1998 world cup tournament, a total of 171 goals were scored by all teams. This record still remains intact.

100. Argentina
In the first edition of world cup in 1930, Argentina scored 18 goals thereby becoming the top-scoring team of the tournament but did not win the world cup.

101. Italy
In the second edition of football world cup in 1934, Italy became the top goal scoring team in the tournament by scoring 12 goals. They also went on to win the world cup in this edition.

102. Hungary
In this third edition of world cup in 1938, Hungary was the top goal scoring team. It scored 15 goals but did not win the world cup.

103. Brazil
In this fourth edition of world cup in 1950, Brazil emerged as top goal scoring team in the tournament with 22 goals but did not win the world cup.

104. Hungary
In this fifth edition of world cup in 1954, Hungary scored a record number of 27 goals in the tournament. This remains as a record till date for maximum number of goals scored by a team in single world cup.

105. France
France was the top goal scoring team in this sixth edition of world cup in 1958. France scored a total of 23 goals but did not win the world cup.

106. Brazil
Brazil was the top goal scoring team in this seventh edition of world cup in 1962 with 14 goals. Brazil also won this edition of world cup.

107. Portugal
In this 8th edition of world cup in 1966, Portual team emerged as the top goal scoring team of the tournament with 17 goals. Portugal did not win this world cup.

108. Brazil
In this 9th edition of football world cup in 1970, Brazil scored a total of 19 goals there by becoming the leading goal scoring team of the tournament and winning championship too.

109. Poland
In this 10th edition of football world cup in 1974, Poland emerged as the top goal scoring team of the tournament with 16 goals. Poland did not win this world cup.

110. Argentina
In this 13th edition of world cup in 1986, Argentina was the top goal scoring team in the tournament with 14 goals and eventually they won the championship.

111. West Germany
In the 1990 world cup which was the 14th edition, west Germany emerged as the leading goal scoring team of the tournament with 15 goals and also won the championship.

112. Sweden
In this 15th edition of world cup in 1994, Sweden emerged as the leading goal scoring team of the tournament with 15 goals but did not win the world cup.

113. France
In this 16th edition of world cup in 1998, France was the leading goal scoring team with 15 goals and also won the world cup title. 

114. Brazil
In this 17th edition of world cup in 2002, Brazil was the leading goal scoring team with 18 goals and also won the world cup title.

115. Germany
In this 18th edition of world cup in 2006, Germany was the top goal scoring team in the tournament with 14 goals.

116. Germany
In this 19th edition of world cup in 2010, Germany was the top goal scoring team in the tournament with 16 goals.

117. 6
Out of 19 world cups so far, host nations have managed to win the world cup title only 6times. Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), England (1966), Germany (1974), Argentina (1978) and France (1998) have done it.
