Tennis superstar and former world number one tennis player Maria Sharapova has called for a press conference and many expected her to either announce retirement or that she is pregnant. But what she revealed shocked everyone. Sharapova revealed she failed a drugs test at the Australian Open after testing positive for meldonium, a substance she has been taking since 2006 for health issues and has been suggested by her personal doctor. This Meldonium wasn’t a banned drug earlier but it was officially banned from 1st January 2016 by WADA.
The Russian star said "I did fail the test and take full responsibility for it. I was getting sick very often, I had a deficiency in magnesium, I had irregular EKG results and I had a family history of diabetes. I received a letter on 22 December from the World Anti Doping Agency for the changes next year and where the tests will be with a link to the changes for 2016 and I did not look at that list. I know that with this, I face consequences and I don't want to end my career this way and I hope that will have a chance to play again”. Now the entire world is eagerly waiting for the punishment she would receive from the sport authorities.
Following this revelation, TAG Heuer has ended partnership with Maria Sharapova, Nike and Porsche have suspended relationship with her.
