Being a huge fan of cricket, am unable to find proper answer to the above question. The above question arises from the very fact that this champions league twenty20 cricket doesn’t generate enough curiosity in me to watch every game of it and follow it. If I, being a hardcore cricket fan feel like this about a world class cricket tournament, can understand how other people feel about it.
During any limited overs international cricket tournament and IPL season, the craze that surrounds these tournaments is quite and obviously people watch them with keen interest. The greatest evidence one can show to prove this is the number of spectators that come to the stadium to watch. But it is not the same case with champions league twenty20. Except for the matches when teams of hosting nations are playing, the remaining matches draw very few crowds. Even the matches when the teams belonging to the hosting nation are playing aren’t occupied to the full capacity. What does it say about the success of the champions league then? People may argue that, this tournament has huge following through TV. But I guess it is not wrong, the same theory applies to IPL and other international t20 tournaments. Then how do they attract huge crowds? It’s just a simple fact that the number of people who watch a particular match on television is directly proportional to number of people in the stadium.
But the financial clout of this champions league twenty20 cricket tournament tells a completely different story. The prize money involved is higher than the IPL. So I don’t understand how it works out. May be because of the participation of the teams from different countries and there by bringing in the audience from across the globe. Champions league t20 cricket tourney might be successful in raising more revenue and as of now it isn’t generating any sort of great interest among cricket lovers. Some might disagree with me, but that is the fact. Hope working bodies of these cricket organizations sit down together, draw out a plan and try to bring in some changes in the concept, the method and structure of the champions league t20 cricket to make it a peoples tournament.
